Video – Space Designer’s Hidden Guitar Cabinets

Apple Logic Pro X’s Amp Designer is a great solution for guitar amp and cabinet simulations. I love it and use it all the time. Add some Pedalboard effects, and it’s not difficult to create a great guitar sound.

Amp Designer

The bottom part of Amp Designer makes it easy to customize the preset combinations of amp head and cabinet pairings. With a few extra tweaks, you can create some inspiring guitar tones.

Space Designer’s Impulse Responses

But unknown to a lot of Logic Pro X users, the amp section of Amp Designer can be turned off. This allows us to use other means for the cabinet simulations. Impulse Responses (IR’s) make for great cabinet emulations. There are plenty of third party guitar speaker IRs available, but Logic Pro’s Space Designer has a few of its own, and some of them are very interesting.

To turn off Amp Designer’s cabinet simulation, simply choose “direct” from the bottom of the Cabinet menu. Load up Space Designer after Amp Designer, and navigate to Warped Effects -> Speakers. You will find a variety of guitar speaker IRs to choose from. Some Impulse Responses are fairly bland and don’t add much; others add a nice texture and ambiance to the guitar amp tone.

Routing Scenarios

A distinct advantage to using separate plug-ins for the amp and cabinet, other than extended choice, is exploring unconventional routing scenarios.

  • What about putting some delay or modulation between the amp and the cabinet?
  • Or maybe try the cabinet before the amp!
  • Or how about some EQ going into the cabinet?

The creative possibilities are endless.

I usually just use the analog circuits category and never looked in the speaker one before. This would be so much faster than re-amping or sending out to a speaker and then mic’ing up. Thanks for the post!

  • Love this Eli. I use the speaker emulations anytime I need to tonally separate two very similar sounding guitar tracks. Space Designer is great to help them sound more separate and distinguishable.
