Logic Pro X contains a plethora of great sounding EQ, compressor, delay, reverb, and other plug-ins useful for vocal processing. A great deal of control and creative possibility is available in shaping the sound of a track. It can however be time consuming experimenting and zeroing in on the optimal signal flow and settings. The idea behind Waves’ signature series vocal processing plug-ins is to do a lot of the work in advance for you, while still offering a degree of creative control.

Signature Series Vocal Plug-Ins

Not only do they take the grunt work out of the equation. They get well known experienced engineers with proven track records to set the important basic parameter values in advance; so they’re ready and waiting for you as soon as the plug-in is called up. They are a great way of getting excellent vocal sounds, with a complete unified set of processes designed to work together, all housed in one plug-in.

In this series I’ll look at four of these signature series vocal processing plug-ins. Do they offer the same degree of control and variety as using Logic Pro’s plug-ins individually? No, they don’t. Is that a bad thing though? No, not necessarily. Sometimes (often!) you just want to be able to dial up a great sound quickly and easily. One doesn’t always need to sift through a set of forty eight screw drivers, when there are just a few standard size screws to adjust!

The Eddie Kramer, Chris Lord Alge, Jack Joseph Puig, and Tony Maserati vocal plug-ins all have preset vocal processing chains set to sound great as soon as they are enabled. The controls are very intuitive, fun to use, and effective in shaping a great vocal sound quickly. They each have slightly different variations of similar fundamental vocal processes, including EQ, compression, delay, and reverb. And they all sound great! Personally, the air band on the Maserati VX1 plug-in really stands out as an exquisitely crafted control that is fairly difficult to emulate manually using conventional plug-ins. But the controls on each of them all have beautiful sounding sweet spots that will work on any vocal.

Will they replace conventional plug-ins like Logic Pro’s Channel EQ, Compressor, and Space Designer? I don’t think there is a yes or no answer to this question. The answer, for me, is: sometimes! Take a look at these videos and hear for yourself what they can do.
