Navigate Logic Pro Dialog Boxes by Keyboard

This morning, before the usual craving for coffee entered my mind, I thought to myself: “what’s the fastest way to program a couple of measures of a four-to-the-floor kick, without using the mouse?”

So I dragged a .WAV into the Arrange Window, and pressed +R for ‘Repeat Region’:

As I tried to navigate the dialog box with the Tab key, all I got was a flashing screen. A quick search on Google pointed me to this article. As it turns out, OS X dialog boxes can be navigated with the Tab key, you just have to turn it on in OS X Preferences. In Preferences/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts, enable ‘All controls’:

Now back to that ‘Repeat Region’ Dialog box:

Every field you see here can be highlighted by pressing the Tab key.

  • Shift + Tab will reverse direction
  • Navigate through the menus with the Arrow keys
  • Hitting Enter will execute ‘OK’
  • Pressing the spacebar or Escape will execute ‘Cancel’

It takes a little time to get used to, but hey, no mouse!

Now where’s that coffee…
